Kaziranga is home to about two-thirds of the world’s greater one-horned rhinos, along with wild elephants, water buffalo, swamp deer and one of India’s highest densities of tigers. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985 and a Tiger Reserve since 2006.

Here is what you need for a smooth trip: the safari ranges, how to book, where to stay, the orchid park, waterfalls, tea gardens and a 3-day plan from Guwahati.

Where is Kaziranga National Park & Why Visit?

Kaziranga National Park lies in the Golaghat and Nagaon districts of Assam, between the Brahmaputra river and the Karbi Anglong hills. Most visitors stay around Kohora, the gateway to the Central Range, on the highway between Guwahati and Jorhat. Seasonal floods keep the grasslands fresh every year, which is why rhinos, elephants and buffalo thrive here. Add the orchid park, tea estates and Assamese food, and Kaziranga makes a rich three-day trip.

How to Reach

  • ✈️ Jorhat Airport – about 100 km, 2 hours
  • ✈️ Guwahati Airport – about 230 km, 5 hours
  • 🚆 Jakhalabandha – nearest small railhead, about 50 km
  • 🚆 Guwahati Railway Station – about 210 km
  • 🚗 NH27 from Guwahati, then NH715 via Kaliabor to Kohora

We drove from Guwahati: NH27 past Jorabat, Nelli and Nagaon, then NH715 from Kaliabor through Jakhalabandha to Kohora. It takes about 4 to 5 hours, with a stop at the Burha Pahar view point.

Best Time to Visit

  • Park open roughly November to April; some ranges open from October
  • Closed during the monsoon (May to September) because of floods
  • November–February: cool and misty, with migratory birds
  • March–April: shorter grass and better sightings, but warmer

We visited in mid-March, when the grass had been burnt back and rhinos were easy to spot in the open.

How to Book Your Kaziranga National Park Safari

🎟️ Easiest Option: Let Your Resort Arrange It

  • Most resorts around Kohora arrange everything for you: hotel pick-up, the jeep, the guide and the safari tickets. Just tell them your preferred range and slot when you book your stay.
  • Seats fill fast from December to March, especially on weekends and holidays, so confirm early.

💻 Booking Online Yourself

  1. Open the official booking site, kazirangasafari.in, also linked from the Assam Tourism safari page.
  2. Register with your mobile number and verify it with the OTP.
  3. Choose jeep or elephant safari, the range, date and slot (morning or afternoon).
  4. Fill in each traveller’s details as on a valid photo ID, pay online and download your booking.

🧭 Choosing a Range

  1. Central Range (Kohora): the most popular, with rhinos, elephants and buffalo in open grassland.
  2. Western Range (Bagori): the highest density of rhinos and good wetland views.
  3. Eastern Range (Agaratoli): best for birds, with large lakes and pelicans.
  4. Burapahar Range (Ghorakati): quieter, hilly forest with gibbons and birds.

⚠️ Things to Know

  • Carry the photo ID you used for booking.
  • Jeep safaris have a morning and an afternoon slot; elephant safaris run early morning in the Central and Western ranges, with limited seats.
  • The park can close at short notice after heavy rain, so keep your dates flexible.
  • Camera fees are charged separately at the range.

🐘 Elephant Safari

Early-morning elephant safaris run in the Central and Western ranges, with limited seats. Riding high above the grass, you can often get very close to rhinos. However, many travellers now choose not to ride elephants, as the practice raises concerns about the animals’ welfare and training. A jeep safari is a good alternative if you share those concerns; the choice is yours.

⏰ Safari Timings

  • Morning jeep safari: entry from about 7:30 am
  • Afternoon jeep safari: entry from about 1:30 pm
  • Elephant safari: early morning, around sunrise

🏨 Where to Stay

  • Borgos Resort, Kohora – where we stayed; comfortable rooms, a helpful safari desk and an excellent dinner.
  • IORA – The Retreat, Kohora – a larger resort with gardens, a pool and easy access to the Central Range.
  • Homestays in the villages around Kohora and Bagori – for a wholesome experience of Assamese home food, tea gardens and village life.

The Kaziranga Safari Experience

Our safari day began before sunrise. The jeep from Borgos picked us up at the gate, and by 7:30 am we were inside the Central Range, wrapped in scarves, with mist still hanging over the elephant grass. The guide scanned the grass in silence, and the only sounds were birds and the jeep’s engine.

Within minutes we found our first rhino, wallowing in a muddy pool and barely bothered by us. Further on, an elephant waded through a carpet of water hyacinth, and a lone tusker fed quietly at the edge of the forest. Each time, the driver switched off the engine and we simply watched.

Kaziranga is just as rewarding for birds. We spotted a great hornbill in a bare tree, woolly-necked storks in the grassland, and geese and shelducks along the water. The two hours passed far too quickly. Rent binoculars in Kohora before you go; they make all the difference.

Food Near Kaziranga National Park

Assamese food is simple, fresh and gentle on spice: rice, dal, mashed vegetables, leafy greens and sour, tangy flavours from local fruits and bamboo shoot. A traditional thali is served on a large plate with many small portions, and vegetarians have plenty of choice.

Assamese Dishes to Try

  • Aloo pitika – mashed potato with mustard oil and onion
  • Khar – a mildly alkaline dish of vegetables
  • Xaak bhaji – stir-fried leafy greens
  • Bamboo shoot curries and pickles
  • Til pitha and narikol laru – sesame and coconut sweets
  • Assam tea, often served in a clay cup

Ask for the vegetarian thali; restaurants usually serve it with dal, two or three vegetables, a green, pitika and chutney.

Where to Eat

  • Jajabor Restaurant, near the Orchid Park – a cheerful, brightly painted place and our pick for an authentic Assamese thali
  • Borgos Resort, Kohora – an excellent dinner after a day outdoors
  • Dreamland Dhaba, on the highway – a handy lunch stop on the way to Kakochang

Kohora has a handful of simple restaurants; resort kitchens are the most reliable for dinner.

Tea Country

  • Hathikuli tea factory and organic store
  • Orthodox and CTC Assam tea to take home
  • Organic black pepper from the estate

Assam’s tea gardens line the road around Kaziranga. Stop at a factory store for fresh, well-priced tea.

Beyond the Safari

Experiences

  • Orchid and Biodiversity Park: we walked slowly through greenhouses of wild orchids – blue vandas, slipper orchids and long sprays of dendrobium – many of them native to the Northeast.
  • Bamboo park: a quiet, shaded avenue lined with tall clumps of bamboo, around 46 species in all; a calm walk after the colour of the orchids.
  • Ethnic museum: traditional Assamese tools, looms, fishing gear and crafts, plus a small rice museum.
  • Kakochang Waterfall: a short walk to a gentle cascade set among tea and rubber plantations.
  • Hathikuli tea estate: we picked up fresh organic tea and black pepper from the estate store.
  • Brahmaputra boat ride: near Tezpur, the river is so wide it feels like a sea, and a slow ride on it is the perfect farewell.
  • Woodcraft in Kohora: Srishti Woodcraft and other small shops sell carved rhinos and bamboo crafts.

Keep the afternoon after a morning safari for the Orchid Park; two hours is just right for its orchids, bamboo, sour-fruit garden and museums.

What to Carry

  • Binoculars (or rent them in Kohora)
  • Earth-toned clothes; avoid bright colours
  • Cap, sunscreen and water
  • A warm layer for misty winter mornings
  • Original photo ID used for booking

Mornings in an open jeep can be chilly and dusty, so carry a scarf.
