This Pench safari guide takes you through Turia Gate, the busiest entry into Pench Tiger Reserve on the Madhya Pradesh side.
Pench is the forest that inspired Kipling’s The Jungle Book. In spring, palash trees glow orange over dry teak forest, and every jeep ride carries the same quiet hope: a tiger at the next bend.
Here is what you need for a smooth safari: how to book permits online, timings, where to stay, and what to expect inside the park.

Where is Pench & Why Visit?
Pench Tiger Reserve sits on the Madhya Pradesh–Maharashtra border and takes its name from the Pench River that winds through it. Turia Gate, near Khawasa in Seoni district, is the most popular MP entry, with the most jeep permits and an easy drive from Nagpur. Teak forest, open meadows and the river make it one of central India’s most rewarding tiger landscapes.
How to Reach
- ✈️ Nagpur Airport – about 85 km
- 🚆 Nagpur Junction – nearest major railhead
- 🚗 NH44 to Khawasa, then a short drive to Turia
Most travellers fly or take the train to Nagpur and drive up NH44. Jabalpur (about 215 km) works if you are coming from the north. Arrive a day before your first safari.
Best Time for a Pench Safari
- Park open October to June; core zone closed July–September
- November–February: cool and pleasant, great for birding
- March–May: hot, but the best months for tiger sightings
Afternoon safaris are closed every Wednesday, and on Holi and Diwali. We visited in late March, when the palash was in full bloom.
How to Book Your Pench Safari Online
🎟️ Book Early – At Least 30 Days Ahead
- Book your safari at least 30 days in advance. Turia permits sell out fast, especially on weekends, holidays and in peak season.
- Book only on the official MP Forest portal: forest.mponline.gov.in
🧭 Step-by-Step Booking
- Open forest.mponline.gov.in and register or log in with your mobile number.

- Select a full jeep (up to 6 guests) or a single seat.
- Enter each traveller’s name exactly as on their photo ID.

⚠️ Things to Know
- The permit is paid online; the jeep (gypsy) and the mandatory guide are paid at the gate. Rates change. Check the latest fees on mponline.
- Carry the same photo ID you used while booking.
- Reach the gate on time. A full-jeep permit lapses one hour after entry time; a single seat after 30 minutes.

- Afternoon: from 3 pm (Oct–Mar) or 4 pm (Apr–Jun) till sunset
🏨 Where to Stay
- Lodges along the Turia–Khawasa road keep you minutes from the gate.
- Most lodges can arrange your jeep and guide for the day.
The Pench Safari Experience
Safaris start in the cold, still dark of dawn. Jeeps line up at Turia Gate, the guide climbs in, and the forest takes over. A langur’s alarm call, fresh pugmarks on the dust track, a sambar frozen mid-step: Pench teaches you to read the jungle, not just look at it.
Sightings are never guaranteed, and that is the magic. Every drive feels different.
